Hi! I'm Vasilios, a Greek-American born and raised in New Jersey. I grew up helping my mother take care of my grandmother, Theodora, who had become paralyzed after a stroke. Seeing a loved one suffer on a daily basis drew me towards learning more about the nervous system and drew me towards a career in healthcare.

Set out to pursue this passion, I studied Neuroscience during my undergrad at Johns Hopkins University. While at Hopkins, I dabbled with a few computer science courses, and I was involved in cognitive neuroscience research, where I programmed an eye-tracker in MATLAB for a human-subjects behavioral experiment.

I graduated in 2020 with aims to apply to medical school after gaining more experience in the healthcare industry. I worked and volunteered as an EMT, a medical-scribe, and a clinical research coordinator before deciding to switch tracks and pursue a career as a software engineer.

With the majority of my experiences in healthcare occurring during and after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, I saw different aspects of the healthcare system stressed to the limits. I've used sluggish and convoluted electronic health record software as a medical scribe and EMT. While working for an orthopedics practice, I discovered a crucial bug in the HL7 messages generate by the practice's EHR, that was preventing the practice from communicating with their patients regarding their post-surgical outcomes. At the same time, I saw plenty of other industries that had surpassed healthcare in the tech realm. The overarching question I kept asking myself throughout my various roles and experiences in healthcare is: How can I improve this software to be more functional to the end-users? I realized that as a software engineer, I could impact patient's outcomes for the better with a scope that I had not previously considered.

Since starting my Master's in Computer Science at Northeastern in Fall 2026, I have already continued my impact on healthcare by joining the Signal Processing and Artifical Intelligence for Time-Variant Health Data (SATH) Lab, as a Khoury Research Apprentice. At the SATH Lab, I am developing on a software package that filters the raw pupillometry signal of eye-blinks and other noise, allowing for analysis of the kinematics of pupil diameter after exposure to light. I am an avid photographer. Anytime I see something interesting (usually when I'm traveling), I snap a picture of it. You can see some of the photos I've taken cycling through as the page background.

Fun-fact: one of the towns I grew up in, Holmdel, was home to a large Bell Labs R&D, The Bell Labs Holmdel Complex, since the early 1960's. If you're not families with Bell Labs, it's the company where C and UNIX were invented by Dennis Ritchie and Ken Thompson. It has since been renovated and reopened as a business hub and community space. Here's a picture I took of the lobby and the exterior:
